For When You Forget Your Power

“The range of what we think and do

is limited by what we fail to notice.

And because we fail to notice

that, we fail to notice

there is little we can do

to change

until we notice

how failing to notice

shapes our thoughts and deeds.”

Daniel Goleman

I came upon these words today and like all true things, they landed in my heart like the thud of a drum. Resonant and impossible to ignore.

The choice of the word “fail” here feels a bit harsh for my taste, but I love the message nevertheless.

Something that never ceases to amaze me is how often we forget our own power and resiliency. I’ve had many 1:1 clients come to me with stories of feeling like they didn’t have the tools — emotional, tangible, or spiritual — to move forward in any area, only to later hear from them that they had demonstrated the exact tool they perceived they were presently lacking during another time of life. They always had the tools, they simply forgot to open their toolkit.

If you're feeling a bit called out by that last statement, BEAUTIFUL. That's because some part of you knows that you may have forgotten yourself along the way too.

I invite you to replace the word “fail” with “forget” and ask yourself honestly…

  • What am I forgetting to notice? Intentionally or unintentionally?

  • How is my mis-remembering contributing to my perceived limitations?

  • What would shift in my life is I chose to remember?

I implore you to dig deep and unearth…

  • Am I forgetting my bravery?

  • Am I forgetting my passion?

  • Am I forgetting my anger?

  • Am I forgetting my joy?

And how can you remember? What acts, thoughts, deeds, or beliefs can you commit yourself to this week that will inspire the remembering? Call forward a time when you exemplified that very trait you feel that you're currently lacking.

Remember yourself. Remember your power.
